Consumer Affairs Authority raids 144 shops over substandard bottles

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has conducted island-wide raids targeting the sale of substandard baby milk bottles and reusable plastic bottles. During these operations, authorities inspected 144 shops and seized approximately 1,400 illegal items. Specific inspections included 96 locations for reusable plastic water bottles and 48 shops selling baby milk bottles.

Under current regulations, reusable plastic bottles for drinking must meet SLS 1616 standards, while baby milk bottles must comply with SLS 1306. Locally manufactured bottles are required to display the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) certification mark. While imported goods do not require the SLS logo, they must be approved under the SLSI import inspection scheme.

New legal provisions under Directive No. 96, issued in the Extraordinary Gazette, are set to come into effect on April 01, 2026. The CAA has launched a supply chain investigation to trace the origins of these goods through supplier invoices and has advised consumers to verify SLS certification on local products and retain purchase receipts.
