Consumer audio trends shift toward open-ear and wired headphones

Consumer preferences in the audio market are shifting away from traditional True-Wireless Stereo (TWS) in-ear models toward wired and open-ear alternatives.

Market data presented at IFA 2026 by Shokz and NielsenIQ indicates that open-ear headphones are growing faster than TWS models in both units sold and revenue. Excluding North America and Russia, open-ear models now account for approximately 17 percent of global headphone sales. This trend is driven by a demand for comfort and long-term wearability, as many users report wearing headphones for more than two hours daily. Users are increasingly seeking to avoid the ear fatigue and pressure associated with in-ear designs.

Simultaneously, there is a noted resurgence in the use of wired headphones. Proponents highlight the reliability of wired models, which do not require batteries or charging cases, thereby eliminating issues with battery degradation and reducing electronic waste. Modern wired options often utilize USB-C connections, offering a simpler, more functional user experience compared to complex wireless models that require frequent firmware updates and app management.
