Consumer behavior and psychological motivations regarding luxury goods

Experts and psychological studies highlight various aspects of consumer behavior, particularly regarding impulsive purchases and the display of wealth.

To avoid unnecessary spending during sales, experts advise against purchasing certain categories of items regardless of discount size. These include clothing that is too small in hopes of future weight loss, uncomfortable luxury footwear, highly seasonal trend items, and cosmetics nearing their expiration dates, which can pose health risks.

From a psychological perspective, the conspicuous consumption of luxury goods—such as designer bags and jewelry—serves as a method to signal social status, attractiveness, and resource access. Research suggests that displaying high-end products can function as a biological signal to attract potential partners, similar to how certain animals use vibrant displays to signal fitness.
