Consumer DNA testing drives surge in unexpected family discoveries

The rise of consumer DNA testing services is significantly altering how Americans understand their family histories. As of March 2026, AncestryDNA leads the market with nearly 30 million kits, followed by 23andMe with approximately 14 million, MyHeritage with 9.6 million, and FamilyTreeDNA and GEDmatch.

These large databases have enabled a boom in unexpected genealogical discoveries. A January 2025 YouGov report indicated that 25% of Americans who used DNA testing services discovered close relatives they were previously unaware of, while one-third reported being surprised by their results.

While many users initially seek ethnicity estimates, a significant portion of the population uses these services for other purposes. According to Pew Research Center data, 87% of users want to learn about their heritage, 36% aim to connect with unknown relatives, and 36% use the tests to identify potential health concerns.
