Consumer experts warn of risks in pre-cut bagged salads
Consumer protection experts and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) have issued warnings regarding the consumption of pre-cut, bagged salads. While these products are generally considered safe for healthy individuals when properly cooled and consumed quickly, they pose specific risks due to the potential presence of microorganisms and pathogens.
The moist cut surfaces created during processing, combined with the humid environment inside the packaging, can facilitate bacterial growth. Factors such as an interrupted cold chain or long storage periods further increase this risk.
High-risk groups, including pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, are advised to avoid pre-cut bagged salads entirely. For these groups, preparing salads from fresh, whole ingredients is recommended as a safer alternative. Healthy consumers are advised to transport bagged salad while chilled, store it in the refrigerator, consume it promptly, and rinse it under running water before eating.
