Consumer fraud alerts issued for Mediamarkt and ADAC impersonations
Consumer protection organizations are warning against various fraudulent schemes targeting customers in Germany. Scammers are currently operating fake online shops that impersonate the electronics retailer Mediamarkt. These fraudulent websites use domains that closely resemble the official site, such as mediamarkt-gg.com and medymarkt.live, to offer significantly discounted products like the PlayStation 5 and OLED televisions. These shops typically demand advance payment, claiming that credit cards or PayPal are unavailable.
Separately, the ADAC, Germany's largest automobile club, has issued warnings regarding phishing attempts via email, WhatsApp, and phone calls. Fraudsters are using deceptive newsletters that mimic official templates to solicit sensitive information. Common tactics include offering fake discounts on used cars, promising gifts in exchange for credit card details, or sending fraudulent payment demands. Some scams falsely claim that ADAC credit cards are restricted or threaten fines for not carrying specific emergency tools, urging victims to click links that install malware or steal data.
