Consumer groups warn against unsafe and unsustainable Halloween products
The Norwegian Consumer Council is warning against purchasing Halloween items from non-European platforms, specifically Temu and Shein. Concerns focus on products for children, cosmetics, electronics, and items used on the skin. A 2025 European study cited by the council found that out of 162 tested toys, chargers, and jewelry from these platforms, 110 did not meet relevant European safety requirements. Specific risks include electric shocks, overheating, loose small parts, and high levels of heavy metals in jewelry.
Temu responded by stating that the test findings are older and highlighted new safety measures, including laboratory testing at partner warehouses.
Separately, the environmental organization Framtiden i våre hender has criticized the environmental impact of Halloween costumes. Leader Tale Hungnes described the trend as the worst form of disposable culture, noting that many costumes are made of polyester and latex, which release microplastics and are nearly impossible to recycle after a single use.
