Consumer lending rises in Maldives and Malawi

Recent financial data from the Maldives and Malawi indicate a significant rise in credit extended to individuals and households, though the economic implications differ by region.

In the Maldives, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) reported that loans to private individuals reached MVR 9.2 billion as of July 2026. This represents a two percent increase from June 2026. Total private sector credit, which includes both businesses and individuals, rose to MVR 41.34 billion. The tourism sector remains the largest recipient of business loans, totaling MVR 12.91 billion.

In Malawi, Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) figures show that lending to individuals and households reached K1 trillion in 2025, surpassing commercial and industrial lending, which stood at K780.4 billion. While increased access to credit can support personal needs, analysts note that the shift toward household borrowing may hinder industrial investment, as businesses face high commercial lending rates between 25 percent and 37 percent.
