Consumer NZ reports five-year low in mobile billing transparency

Consumer NZ’s fifth annual review of mobile phone provider transparency indicates that standards have reached their lowest level since the reviews began. Despite the Commerce Commission publishing Mobile Transparency Guidelines in November 2025, major providers including 2degrees, Spark, and One NZ are reportedly moving in the wrong direction.

Consumer NZ representative Nick Gelling noted that the current voluntary approach is failing to deliver necessary changes. He emphasized that clear information regarding data usage and spending is essential for customers to determine if they are on appropriate plans.

Among the providers, 2degrees received the lowest score of 46%. This decline was attributed to the company failing to send customers annual summaries of usage and spending between July 2025 and July 2026 while addressing data issues related to a new IT platform.
