Consumer prices see 0.3% quarterly decline

Consumer prices saw a slight quarterly decline of 0.3% during the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest quarterly analysis from the Agence nationale de la statistique et de la démographie (ANSD).

This decrease was primarily driven by a 1.0% drop in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, alongside a 0.6% reduction in costs related to housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels. However, the downward trend was not universal, as prices in most other consumption categories increased, while education and financial services remained stable.

On an annual basis, the consumer price index rose by 1.0% compared to the same period in 2025. This yearly increase was supported by rising costs in food and beverages, personal care, social protection, healthcare, and hospitality services. Notably, the sector for alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics saw a significant annual increase of 11.4%.
