Consumer Reports finds contaminants in many popular kids' snacks
Consumer Reports evaluated 21 popular packaged snacks for children to identify the presence of process contaminants, phthalates, and heavy metals. The testing revealed that 14 of the 21 products contained concerning levels of at least one contaminant.
While many products showed non-detectable levels of heavy metals, some healthier and organic options still contained concerning amounts of certain chemicals. Seven products tested were found to have all contaminants below levels of concern. Eric Boring, the food safety scientist who led the study, stated the goal was to provide parents with information beyond nutritional facts to help them make better snack choices.
