Consumer Reports tests chocolate ice cream brands

Consumer Reports conducted a blind taste test of 11 chocolate ice cream brands, evaluating them on flavor, texture, and value. Major brands Breyers and Häagen-Dazs received high marks for taste.

Several store brands were identified as high-value alternatives. Aldi’s Specially Selected Super Premium Chocolate Ice Cream was noted for tasting similar to Häagen-Dazs while costing approximately 65 percent less. Other notable mentions included Wellsley Farms Premium Chocolate Ice Cream from BJ’s Wholesale Club for its dark chocolate flavor, 365 Whole Foods Market Chocolate Ice Cream for its bittersweet notes, and Trader Joe’s Ultra Chocolate for dark chocolate enthusiasts.

Nutritionists noted that premium ice cream varieties typically contain higher fat content and more calories than regular varieties. For a lighter alternative, a recipe for frozen chocolate-banana bites was suggested.
