Consumer shopping habits and common mistakes in Germany

Consumers often make common mistakes when purchasing staple foods like bread and apples in supermarkets. Regarding bread, many buyers are misled by dark colors, which can be achieved through additives like malt or caramel syrup rather than whole grains. Checking the ingredient list is essential to ensure whole grain content and avoid high sugar or additives. Additionally, some products have been found to exceed limits for the pollutant MOAH.

When buying apples, shoppers frequently overlook quality indicators such as skin texture and firmness. Bruises and wrinkles can lead to rapid spoilage and mold. A dull sound when tapping an apple may indicate juiciness, whereas a hollow sound can suggest mealy flesh. While Germany has approximately 1,000 apple varieties, only about 40 are typically available in retail stores. From an ecological perspective, imported apples may eventually have a lower CO2 footprint than locally stored apples after 8 to 9 months of storage.
