Consumer spending trends show strategic holiday shopping amid inflation

Recent consumer reports indicate a complex landscape for holiday retail, characterized by economic caution and strategic spending. According to Feedvisor, inflation remains a primary concern, particularly for shoppers over 65, where 69 percent cited it as a pressure. In contrast, younger consumers like Generation Z are more influenced by job insecurity and credit card debt, though 53 percent of them still intend to increase their spending this year.

In the United Kingdom, Mail Metro Media reports that while 34 percent of shoppers worry about affordability, many are opting to shop more strategically rather than cutting back entirely. This includes a higher reliance on retailer loyalty schemes and discounts. A significant portion of consumers, 58 percent, plan to utilize Black Friday promotions to secure gifts.

Technology is also reshaping the shopping journey. While AI tools like ChatGPT are increasingly used to start product searches, marketplaces like Amazon remain the primary destination for final purchases. Additionally, social media and AI-driven personalized recommendations are seeing increased engagement, particularly among Millennial and Gen Z demographics.
