Consumer test results for cooked ham in Germany

A consumer test conducted by the ARD consumer editorial team evaluated five different cooked ham products, comparing budget supermarket brands against premium and organic options. The testing was performed by meat sommelier Jörg Erchinger and star chef Wolfgang Müller.

Results showed that Aldi’s ‘Gut Drei Eichen’ brand and Edeka’s ‘Gut & Günstig’ brand were the top performers. The Aldi product was described as mild, fine, and elegant, while the Edeka option was noted for its meaty texture.

In contrast, more expensive brands failed to impress the experts. The Rewe Bio ham was compared to a pressed chicken nugget, the Herta brand was criticized for being too salty and dry, and the Alnatura product was described as tasting more like sausage than ham.
