Consumer tests reveal high-quality budget toothpaste options
Recent consumer testing by Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test has highlighted significant quality differences between expensive brand-name toothpastes and affordable discount alternatives.
In one study, several toothpaste products priced under 60 cents received the highest rating of ‘very good,’ while well-known brands like Colgate received ‘insufficient’ marks due to the presence of pollutants. Other tests covering 69 products showed a wide range of quality, from ‘very good’ to ‘deficient,’ with prices varying from 55 cents to over 15 euros per tube.
The findings suggest that consumers can find effective oral hygiene products—including universal, sensitive, and whitening varieties—at much lower price points than premium brands. Discount and drugstore brands often provide larger volumes, such as 125-milliliter tubes, while maintaining high safety and efficacy standards.
