Consumer warning issued regarding toxic ornamental pumpkins
Consumer protection agencies, including the Bremen Consumer Advice Center, have issued warnings regarding the consumption of ornamental pumpkins. Unlike common edible varieties, ornamental pumpkins can contain cucurbitacins, which are natural bitter substances.
Ingesting these substances can lead to gastrointestinal distress, including symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Children and the elderly are noted as being particularly vulnerable to these effects.
While commercial edible pumpkins have largely been bred to remove these bitter compounds, ornamental varieties often retain them. Experts also warn that home-grown edible pumpkins may be affected if insects transfer pollen from ornamental varieties during the pollination process. Consumers are advised to ensure any pumpkin intended for consumption is explicitly labeled as an edible variety.
