Consumers in Syria and Turkey warned of ATM and POS fraud
Security experts in Syria caution that rising ATM use has led to a surge in fraud techniques such as skimming devices attached to card slots, fake key‑pad panels, hidden miniature cameras, and card‑trapping mechanisms. They advise users to closely inspect the machine for loose parts, abnormal keypad irregularities, suspicious cameras, and to avoid ATMs where strangers linger. After any withdrawal, customers should immediately review their account via mobile banking and contact their bank if the card is retained.
In Turkey, financial specialists warn that mistakes at point‑of‑sale (POS) terminals—such as entering a PIN without confirming the displayed amount, approving contactless payments without verification, or allowing a device to be re‑read after a failed transaction—can result in overcharges or duplicate withdrawals. They recommend confirming the exact amount on the screen before entering a PIN, keeping receipts, enabling instant transaction alerts, and promptly reporting any discrepancies to the issuing bank.
