Consumers' Insurance Bureau warns students about home insurance gaps
Many students moving into new housing mistakenly believe they remain covered under their parents' home insurance policies. According to the Consumers' Insurance Bureau (Konsumenternas Försäkringsbyrå), coverage typically ends the moment a person moves into their own residence.
Gustav Jonsson, a lawyer and insurance specialist at the bureau, warns that failing to secure independent insurance can lead to significant financial consequences. This applies to all students, including those subletting or living as lodgers. A proper home insurance policy provides essential protection against fire, water damage, and theft, while also including travel, liability, and legal protection.
To avoid risks, experts recommend that students compare different policies, as many providers offer specific student rates. They also suggest checking for existing child or youth insurance and adding condominium supplements if moving into a housing cooperative.
