Contactless payment security: Risks and protection methods

Contactless payment technologies, including RFID/NFC-enabled credit cards and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, are facing evolving security risks. Malicious actors can utilize wireless skimming techniques to intercept card data in crowded areas such as airports, shopping centers, and public transport.

One common fraud method involves scammers intentionally entering higher transaction amounts than agreed upon during tap-to-pay interactions, often relying on the distraction of crowds to prevent victims from verifying the amount on the POS terminal screen. Another method involves criminals using portable readers near a victim's pocket or bag to steal small amounts.

To mitigate these risks, experts suggest several protective measures. Wrapping cards in aluminum foil can create a Faraday cage, blocking the electromagnetic fields used by contactless systems. Additionally, consumers are advised to always verify the transaction amount on the POS screen before completing a payment and to request a receipt for every transaction.
