Contactless payment trends and network comparisons in France
In France, the use of contactless payment via Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has seen significant growth, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic. While this technology allows for quick transactions by bringing a card or smartphone close to a terminal, it carries risks of fraud. Malicious actors can potentially use terminals to intercept encrypted data from a victim's card if they are in close proximity.
Regarding the major payment networks, Visa and Mastercard dominate the French market. Visa maintains a broader presence among French retail banks due to long-standing historical partnerships, appearing in 122 out of 130 surveyed institutions, compared to 69 for Mastercard. While Visa offers wider availability for both classic and premium cards, the annual costs for these cards are nearly identical between the two providers, with Mastercard holding a negligible price advantage.
