Contagem shopping center ordered to pay damages for trans woman discrimination
The Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG) has ordered a shopping center in Contagem and its security firm to pay moral damages to a transgender woman who faced discrimination in 2019. The court ruled that security personnel acted discriminatorily when they directed the woman to use the men's restroom and demanded documentation to prove her sex reassignment.
The 20th Civil Chamber of the TJMG recognized that the approach violated human dignity. While the establishment and security company argued that no physical prevention occurred and denied aggressive treatment, the court upheld the decision for compensation following an appeal from the initial ruling.
