Container freight rates rise amid global shipping bottlenecks
Global container freight rates have seen significant volatility and upward trends, with the World Container Index (WCI) rising to approximately 4,500 USD per 40ft container in September 2026. This represents a substantial year-on-year increase compared to September 2025.
Market dynamics vary by route. Transpacific rates, such as Shanghai to Los Angeles and Shanghai to New York, have seen increases driven by pre-Golden Week demand and blank sailings. Conversely, Asia-Europe routes, including Shanghai to Rotterdam and Shanghai to Genoa, have faced different pressures due to shifting service patterns through the Suez Canal and varying demand levels.
Several geopolitical and environmental bottlenecks are contributing to these rising costs. Tensions in the Bab el-Mandeb strait have impacted maritime security and Suez Canal transit reliability. Additionally, drought conditions in the Panama Canal have led to transit rationing, with vessel waiting times increasing significantly compared to the previous year. These factors combined are creating a complex environment for procurement departments choosing between spot rates and long-term contracts.
