Container image optimization and security techniques

Recent technical investigations highlight methods for improving container image efficiency and security. One approach involves using the Stargz Snapshotter on OpenShift (specifically OKD) to enable lazy-pulling. This method allows containers to start by downloading only the files strictly necessary for the entrypoint, rather than waiting for the entire image to be downloaded and unpacked, which is particularly beneficial for large images.

Another strategy focuses on reducing image size and vulnerability footprints by separating build and runtime concerns. By using stripped-down base images instead of full operating system distributions like Debian or Ubuntu, developers can create minimal images. This process reduces the number of installed packages and minimizes Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs), resulting in smaller, more secure deployment images.
