Container shipping industry sees record profits through vessel scaling
The container shipping industry has seen massive profit surges, with global operating profits reaching a record $208 billion in 2022, compared to a total of $37.5 billion earned between 2010 and 2020. This growth was significantly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which drove container freight rates to unprecedented levels.
To maximize efficiency, shipping companies are increasingly utilizing ultra-large container vessels. Larger ships offer significant economies of scale, reducing operating costs per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) by requiring less steel, fewer crew members, and less fuel compared to running multiple smaller vessels. Currently, the MSC Irina, operated by Switzerland's MSC, is a leading vessel in terms of capacity, capable of carrying 24,346 TEUs. Despite the economic advantages of larger ships, vessel lengths have remained largely capped at approximately 399.9 meters for over a decade.
