Container shipping market faces supply pressure through 2027
The container shipping market faces shifting supply and demand dynamics through 2026 and 2027. According to BIMCO, disruptions and growth in head-haul trades have supported the market in 2026, but accelerating fleet growth is expected to weaken the supply/demand balance in 2027. The container ship order book currently exceeds 14 million TEU, representing approximately 42% of the existing fleet.
Global container volumes grew 5.1% year-on-year during the first seven months of 2026. While growth in non-Persian Gulf trades has offset falling volumes in South and West Asia, risks to demand remain. Higher energy prices in the US and EU, alongside slowing Chinese retail sales, could impact future growth. BIMCO notes that unless transit conditions in the Strait of Hormuz normalize, oil supply constraints could further weaken global economic growth.
Freight rate benchmarks show a divided landscape. While global container freight benchmarks have softened, Transpacific rates have strengthened, specifically on Asia-US West Coast and East Coast routes. Conversely, Asia-Europe rates have continued to decline. Chinese freight indexes remain mixed, with the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index remaining nearly flat while the China Containerized Freight Index saw a slight increase.
