Container shipping rates rise amid capacity constraints

Global container shipping rates are rising due to limited capacity, port congestion in China, and geopolitical tensions. The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased by 4% to $4,526 per 40-foot container, driven largely by higher costs on Pacific routes.

Specific increases include a 9% rise for shipments from Shanghai to New York, reaching $9,507, and a 9% rise for the Shanghai to Los Angeles route, reaching $6,802. Shipping companies are managing capacity by reducing available space or canceling scheduled services; seven cancellations have already been announced for the upcoming week.

Capacity from Asia to the US East Coast fell by 9% in August compared to July. Geopolitical risks remain elevated following the expiration of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which has not yet resulted in a permanent solution.
