Container shipping rates surge on Transpacific routes

Global container shipping markets are experiencing a widening divergence between trade routes. Transpacific rates have surged, with the Shanghai-Los Angeles route increasing 5% and Shanghai-New York climbing 7%. Conversely, Asia-Europe rates have declined for seven consecutive weeks, with Shanghai-Rotterdam dropping 9% and Shanghai-Genoa falling 5%.

In the intra-Asia market, the Drewry Intra-Asia Container Index rose 6% to a record high for the fourth straight week. Spot rates from China to Southeast Asian hubs like Laem Chabang and Ho Chi Minh City both increased by 15% ahead of the Chinese Golden Week holiday.

Operational challenges are mounting due to weather-related disruptions and increased port congestion. Average vessel waiting times in Shanghai and Ningbo have risen significantly, reaching 78 and 77 hours respectively. Additionally, shipping companies like CMA CGM are restructuring services, and geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea continue to impact freight markets and bunker costs.
