Contaminated diesel fuel causes costly vehicle damage in Veneto, Italy

In two weeks, five motorists in the Veneto provinces of Belluno and Treviso reported severe engine failures after refuelling. Technical examinations linked the damage to water and other pollutants found in the diesel fuel, leading to clogged filters and compromised injection systems.

Repair costs average between €3,000 and €4,500 per vehicle, with some cases exceeding €4,500, and have forced families to cancel summer travel plans. Consumer association Adiconsum urged drivers to keep fuel receipts, obtain written mechanic assessments, and file compensation claims, while warning that “reducing checks or relying on opaque supply chains … increases the risk of low‑quality fuel on the market,” said Stefano Bellotto, head of Adiconsum Treviso‑Belluno. The group is calling for stricter fuel‑quality controls and greater regulatory oversight to prevent further damage.
