Contaminated diesel fuel triggers car breakdowns in four Italian provinces

A wave of diesel fuel contamination has been reported in the Italian provinces of Treviso, Belluno, Venice and Udine. Mechanic inspections found water, other contaminants and, in one case, algae inside fuel filters, causing engines to stall and damage repairs estimated at €3,000‑€4,000. The problem was first identified after vehicles broke down following refuelling in Belluno and Treviso, and has since spread to include incidents such as a car stopping in the Segusino tunnel and another in Mestre.

Consumer association Adiconsum, representing motorists in the region, says the contamination involves both independent “white‑pump” stations and major international fuel distributors, suggesting a systemic issue in the supply chain or storage depots. Adiconsum has opened a legal office to aid affected drivers, is demanding rapid compensation, and is calling for an urgent meeting with fuel‑industry associations to investigate the source and prevent further incidents.
