Continental wins Auto Express 2026 best winter tire test
Auto Express has released its 2026 rankings for the best winter tires following comprehensive testing on snow, wet roads, and dry asphalt. The tests evaluated 11 European models in the 205/55 R16 size, focusing on braking, traction, handling, aquaplaning, noise, and rolling resistance.
Continental WinterContact TS870 secured first place with a 100% score, marking its third win in this size category. It demonstrated exceptional performance on wet surfaces, leading in both braking and cornering, while also achieving the best results for cabin noise. The Pirelli Cinturato Winter 3 followed closely in second place with a 99.8% score, and the Hankook i’cept RS3 W462 took third with 99.4%, notably performing best in snow braking.
Other notable rankings include Bridgestone Blizzak 6 Enliten and Michelin Alpin 7 sharing fourth place. The testing highlighted that lower price points do not necessarily equate to higher performance, as the Minerva Frostrack HP finished last with a 93% score due to poor wet-weather results.
To assist consumers in selection, experts recommend checking tire sidewall markings and EU labels. Key indicators include the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) symbol, which certifies tested performance in low temperatures, and the EU label, which rates fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external noise levels.
