Controversy in Alfafar over mural honoring Maricarmen Abascal
A mural in Alfafar dedicated to Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman who passed away following an eviction in Madrid, has sparked controversy. The urban artist Josep Roca, known as Rekiem, created the work to honor her memory, a case that has gained public attention through social movements advocating for better protection against evictions.
Roca claims he had explicit permission from the property owner to paint the wall, but states a neighbor filed a complaint against him. Following a visit from local police, the artist discovered the mural had been partially defaced with a dark, sticky substance. Roca has since repainted the affected areas to restore the tribute.
