Controversy surrounds Nvidia's decision to establish Taipei headquarters
Political debate has emerged in Taiwan regarding the credit attributed to Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an for Nvidia's decision to establish an overseas headquarters in the Taipei Science Park (Beishi Science Park).
Critics, including technology columnist Hsu Mei-hua, have suggested that Nvidia's choice was driven by its global strategy and existing workforce in Taipei rather than local government intervention. Some reports indicate that comments made by Shi Fang-gen, the wife of Mayor Chiang, regarding personal connections to Nvidia leadership have caused internal friction within the company.
Legislator Hsu Chiao-hsin defended the city administration, stating that Taipei's efficient administrative processes, industrial clusters, and land availability were key factors in the selection. Meanwhile, Lin Yu-chang argued that the credit belongs to Taiwan's robust semiconductor industry and supply chain, rather than individual political figures, while also urging the city to address potential transportation infrastructure challenges in the area.
