Conversation pits return as a major interior design trend

The retro ‘conversation pit’ or sunken lounge is experiencing a resurgence in interior design, moving from a 1970s staple to a modern trend focused on social connection. Data from Temple & Webster indicates a 24 per cent year-on-year increase in searches for modular, curved, and sectional seating, with searches for specific modular and curved sofa collections rising by 240 per cent.

Industry experts suggest this shift reflects a desire to move away from screen-centric living. Rather than the television serving as the sole focal point of a room, new furniture layouts are designed to encourage face-to-face interaction. Modern interpretations favor tactile fabrics like bouclé, chenille, and textured linen over the velvet and shag carpeting of previous decades.

At Milan Design Week, Paris-based design studio Supaform showcased this trend through Maxim Shcherbakov’s ‘Transit Encounters’ installation. The work reimagines the concept by extending the ‘aura’ of seating beyond physical boundaries to create dedicated zones for gathering and music.
