Matt Sleep, Converse’s global design director, noted that Cobain likely appreciated the “little weird detail” of the smile when paired with his signature ripped jeans and flannel shirts. The shoe's namesake, Jack Purcell, was a charismatic badminton champion from Guelph, Ontario, in the 1930s.
