Converse withdraws campaign following racial insensitivity accusations

Converse has withdrawn a promotional photograph from its ‘Chuck 70 X’ campaign following accusations of racial insensitivity. The campaign featured Karina, a member of the K-pop group aespa.

Users pointed out that a white triangular shape projected onto the singer's skirt resembled Ku Klux Klan hoods. Additionally, the way she held black sneakers by their laces drew comparisons to imagery of racial lynchings in the United States. The controversy was further compounded by another promotional image showing sneakers hanging from a tree branch.

In a public statement, Converse apologized, stating, “We understand why this image is deeply disturbing and we recognize that we made a mistake.” The company has not provided specific details regarding its internal review processes or how the imagery was approved.
