Convoy of former President Lazarus Chakwera attacked in Blantyre
A convoy belonging to former President Lazarus Chakwera was reportedly attacked during a religious gathering in Blantyre on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The incident occurred outside the CCAP Blantyre Synod during celebrations for its 150th anniversary.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) alleges that a group of suspected regime-aligned individuals blocked access routes and targeted opposition supporters. Reports indicate that several vehicles were vandalized, including one belonging to Moses Kunkuyu.
Journalists Francis Chamasowa and Francis Nkawihe were reportedly assaulted while attempting to document the unrest. Witnesses stated the reporters were manhandled and forced to delete photographs of the attackers for their own safety.
The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has condemned the violence, describing it as a threat to democracy and press freedom. The organization expressed concern regarding allegations that police officers witnessed the incidents without intervening, calling for an immediate and impartial investigation into the matter.
