Cook Islands deep-sea expedition uncovers new marine life and minerals

A 26-day deep-sea expedition conducted by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has yielded significant new data regarding marine life and seabed minerals in the Cook Islands’ exclusive economic zone.

Utilizing the ship Okeanos Explorer, the mission performed 14 remotely operated vehicle dives across seamounts, abyssal plains, and the Manihiki Plateau. Researchers collected over 400 samples and more than 23 biological specimens, some of which are potentially new to science. The expedition also confirmed the existence of extensive polymetallic nodule fields in areas where their presence was previously unexpected.

The findings arrive as the Cook Islands and the wider Pacific region weigh the implications of deep-sea mining for valuable minerals. Scientists noted that establishing a biological baseline is essential for local communities to make informed decisions regarding ocean resources and ecosystem management.
