Cook Islands election poll shows no clear majority

A recent selection poll indicates a highly competitive upcoming election in the Cook Islands, with no single political party expected to secure a clear majority. The results suggest that any future government will likely require a coalition to manage the 13-seat parliamentary majority.

The governing Cook Islands Party (CIP), led by caretaker Prime Minister Mark Brown, maintains a narrow lead with 30.5 percent of popular support. However, they face a significant challenge from the Cook Islands United Party (CIUP), led by Teariki Heather, which has surged to 26.7 percent support. This rise has effectively positioned the CIUP as the primary challenger to the incumbent party.

The Democratic Party has seen a decline in support, polling at 8.6 percent, which ties them with Independent candidates. With 25.7 percent of the electorate still undecided and Independents holding over 20 percent of the vote in the outer islands (Pa Enua), the election remains unpredictable as voters weigh cost-of-living concerns.
