Cook Islands Party poised for fifth consecutive term

Preliminary results from the 2026 Cook Islands general election indicate that the governing Cook Islands Party (CIP), led by Mark Brown, is on track to secure a fifth consecutive term. According to preliminary counts, the CIP has secured 12 seats, while independent candidates hold eight seats and the Cook Islands United Party has secured four.

Political analyst William Numanga suggested that the election results reflect a voter preference for stability. While the CIP remains the strongest national political organization, the final composition of Parliament remains unsettled due to close contests in several constituencies, including Manihiki, Rakahanga, Pukapuka, and Ngatangiia.

Additional votes by declaration and postal ballots are still being processed, with a final count expected late this week or early next week. The Democratic Party has pledged an ‘honest review’ following its preliminary performance.
