Coolcation Trend Sends Summer Travelers to Northern Europe

Travelers are increasingly opting for "coolcations" – vacations in cooler regions – to escape rising summer heat. Data from the RateHawk platform show an 8% rise in searches for cool destinations in June and a 47% jump in searches for Iceland compared with last summer. Across Europe, 28% of travelers now actively look for milder climates, favoring places such as Iceland, Norway, Finland, the Scottish Highlands, the Alps and the Baltic coasts.

In Austria, overnight stays in Scandinavia have grown by more than 40% since 2016, the strongest relative increase among European regions, although absolute numbers remain modest (about 350,000 stays versus over 5 million in Croatia). The Austrian travel association notes that price and safety still dominate destination choice, with temperature becoming a secondary factor.

Germany’s Juist island is marketing itself as a coolcation hotspot, highlighting its fresh sea air, wind and moderate summer temperatures of 16‑20 °C, along with thalasso treatments that capitalize on the cool climate.

Overall, the coolcation trend reflects a shift in summer travel preferences toward northern and mountainous locales that offer comfortable temperatures, less crowding and opportunities for outdoor activities.
