Coop and DSK propose automatic age verification via payment cards

Coop and De Samvirkende Købmænd (DSK) are advocating for the implementation of automatic age verification through payment cards to restrict minors' access to alcohol, tobacco, and nicotine products.

This proposal is a central part of a 10-point plan aimed at reducing youth nicotine consumption. Proponents argue that a technological solution would prevent minors from completing purchases while relieving retail employees of the burden of manual ID checks, which can lead to confrontations and workplace tension.

While the technical solutions currently exist, industry leaders state that political will is required to make this technology available to all retailers nationwide. The initiative also seeks to address the rising trend of youth purchasing e-cigarettes via social media and online platforms.
