Coop Sweden cuts food prices amid warnings of rising grocery costs
The Swedish grocery retailer Coop is implementing a permanent price reduction on more than 600 high-volume products across its Stora Coop supermarkets. CEO Anders Torell stated that the company has been perceived as expensive in public price surveys, a position he described as not sustainable in the long term. The price cuts, which began on October 5, will average a 6.9 percent reduction on the selected items.
While Coop is lowering prices to regain customer trust and competitiveness, other market indicators suggest upward pressure on food costs. Matpriskollen reports that the period of stable food prices may be ending. According to founder and CEO Ulf Mazur, the number of items receiving price increases doubled in September, rising from one in ten to one in five products. This shift is attributed to rising producer costs and the potential end of price freezes from suppliers, influenced by factors such as international conflicts and weather phenomena.
