Coop system evolution highlights integration of Italian cooperatives
The Italian Coop system is characterized by a unique evolutionary model of integration. Unlike distribution systems in Germany, the United States, or France, which typically expand from a single business model and organization, the Coop model began with autonomous, territorially distinct entities that integrated over time.
This process of continuous aggregation, which accelerated with the development of supermarkets in the 1970s, has resulted in a landscape of fewer but larger enterprises. Currently, six major companies represent nearly 90% of the system's total turnover. This structural evolution has created a diverse ecosystem where businesses vary significantly in size, organizational structure, and market share, with presence ranging from dominant positions in certain geographic areas to market shares below 10% in others.
