Coop to close long-standing Rotebro store amid broader challenges

The Stora Coop location in Rotebro, Sweden, is set to close its doors, marking the end of a nearly 60-year history at the site. Coop Östra has decided to decommission the store and vacate the premises by February 28, 2027. The location originally opened in 1967 as the Obs! discount department store under the Konsum Stockholm name, quickly exceeding initial sales projections.

The closure comes as the Coop cooperative faces various regional difficulties. Coop Syd reported a significant financial crisis, recording a loss of nearly 400 million SEK in 2024, which required hundreds of millions in support from the parent association. Additionally, a recent fire at the Coop Gamlestaden location in Gothenburg has caused operational disruptions and destroyed customer property.
