Cooper Green Homes completes $30M renovation in Birmingham

A nearly $30 million renovation of the Cooper Green Homes community on the southwest side of Birmingham has been completed. The project involved substantial rehabilitation of the 32-acre site, which was originally built in 1971.

Led by Paces Preservation Partners in collaboration with the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD), the investment averaged approximately $132,000 in improvements per apartment. The renovated community includes 227 apartments across various configurations, ranging from one-bedroom to five-bedroom units. Additionally, the site features a community center, management office, daycare center with Head Start programming, and several playgrounds.

City leaders, housing officials, and development partners held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the final phases. U.S. Representative Terri Sewell noted that the project is a significant step in addressing the housing affordability crisis.
