Cooper Lutkenhaus Wins U.S. 800m Title in Record-Breaking Race
Seventeen‑year‑old Texas‑born Cooper Lutkenhaus claimed the U.S. 800 metres championship at Icahn Stadium in New York, finishing in 1:43.48. He surged ahead in the final 200 metres to win by more than a second over Wes Ferguson (1:44.55), with Hobbs Kessler third in 1:45.00.
Lutkenhaus, who will start his senior year of high school in three weeks, said the race was his last competitive effort before the winter indoor season. He previously finished second at the U.S. trials last year in 1:42.27, becoming the youngest American ever to qualify for the outdoor world championships at 16. In March he became the youngest man to win an individual title at the World Indoor Championships, and he added Diamond League victories in Oslo and Stockholm earlier this month.
