Cooperative Bank of Thessaly seeks investor to boost capital
The Cooperative Bank of Thessaly is seeking a new investor to strengthen its capital base by the end of 2026. The bank's management aims to secure new funds to improve regulatory and supervisory indicators, following observations from the Bank of Greece regarding the necessity of a capital boost.
The search for an investor is subject to a key condition: the infusion of capital must be conducted in a manner that preserves the institution's cooperative character and local identity. This requirement adds complexity to the process as the bank attempts to balance significant capital needs with its existing organizational structure.
The urgency of the situation was previously highlighted in a 2025 financial report by Grant Thornton. The auditor included a section titled ‘material uncertainty related to going concern,’ noting that current capital adequacy levels could impact future results and the ability to continue operations under certain conditions.
