Cooperstown's National Baseball Hall of Fame history

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is located in Cooperstown, New York, due to historical circumstances rather than the popular myth that Abner Doubleday invented the sport there in 1839.

The legend originated from the Mills Commission, established in 1905 by sporting goods magnate A. G. Spalding to determine if baseball was a uniquely American invention. In 1908, the commission concluded that Doubleday had devised the game's rules in Cooperstown, a claim based largely on the testimony of Abner Graves.

However, research from the Society for American Baseball Research suggests this account is inaccurate, noting that Doubleday’s own diaries contain no mention of baseball. The actual placement of the Hall of Fame in the small village was driven by a wealthy local resident's efforts to support the town during the Great Depression.
