COP 30 to address climate negotiations and vehicle decarbonization
The 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30), scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, will serve as a critical platform for multilateral negotiations regarding global climate finance and emission reductions.
Discussions at the event are expected to extend into the future of mobility and decarbonization. According to Masao Ukon of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), addressing vehicle emissions requires a life-cycle approach, often referred to as ‘cradle to grave,’ which accounts for raw material extraction, manufacturing, usage, and disposal.
A study by the National Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) and BCG indicates that the transport sector is the third-largest emitter of pollutants in Brazil. Within this sector, heavy vehicles are responsible for 58% of emissions, while light vehicles account for 34%.
Beyond the public-facing plenary sessions, the success of the COP relies on informal negotiations and strategic alliances. Groups such as the European Union, the G77 and China, and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) coordinate positions to influence the binding nature and implementation of international climate commitments.
